Two New Foot‑and‑Mouth Cases Detected in Larnaca as Outbreak Reaches 34 Farms

Two more livestock farms in Larnaca district tested positive for foot‑and‑mouth disease on Sunday, bringing the total number of affected units nationwide to 34, authorities said.

Laboratory tests confirmed new infections in cattle and sheep‑goat holdings in Dromolaxia and Aradippou, according to the Veterinary Services.

The latest cases come as Cyprus continues to battle a fast‑spreading outbreak that has hit farms across several districts. Over the past week, authorities intensified inspections, expanded surveillance zones and increased on‑site veterinary teams in an effort to contain the virus.

The government has also begun compensating affected farmers and is preparing additional measures, including revised regulations and updated biosecurity protocols.

The outbreak has already prompted movement restrictions on animals, mandatory disinfection procedures and discussions over potential culling in severe cases — a step the government says must be evaluated carefully, including its legal implications.

Authorities are urging farmers to report symptoms immediately and to strictly follow containment guidelines to prevent further spread.
