Turkey’s Cabinet is set to discuss the possible deployment of F‑16 fighter jets in the Turkish‑occupied north of Cyprus, Turkish media reported Monday, a move that would mark a significant escalation in Ankara’s military posture on the island.

The meeting, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will also review the ongoing war in the Middle East and its implications for regional security.

According to Turkish reports, ministers will examine when a final decision should be taken on the deployment, as well as the method and timing of implementation. Ankara is also expected to present phased security plans it has prepared for the occupied areas.

The issue has gained prominence in recent weeks as Turkey has signaled a more assertive military stance in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkish officials have repeatedly linked the potential deployment to what they describe as the need to “protect” the north amid rising instability in the region.

The discussion comes after Ankara announced upgrades to its air assets in the Eastern Mediterranean and amid reports that Turkey is seeking to expand its military infrastructure in the occupied territories. Any move to station F‑16s there would likely draw strong reactions from Cyprus, Greece and the European Union, which consider the Turkish military presence on the island illegal under international law.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkey’s 1974 invasion, and Ankara maintains more than 30,000 troops in the north. The possible deployment of advanced fighter jets would represent the most significant change to the military balance on the island in decades.
