An Italian missile frigate has arrived in waters off Cyprus, Italian authorities have said, as European partners step up coordination in response to heightened tensions in the Middle East.
The Federico Martinengo is crewed by more than 160 men and women of the Italian Navy. Its deployment to Cyprus is part of a joint initiative undertaken by Italy, France and Spain to bolster the island’s protection as instability in the region deepens.
France’s aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is already operating in the Mediterranean, accompanied by the Spanish frigate Cristóbal Colón and additional support vessels.
The increased naval presence comes as the broader region remains on alert following Iran’s latest escalation, including threats of further retaliation and stepped‑up military posturing that have drawn international concern. European governments have urged restraint, warning that any widening of the conflict could destabilize key shipping routes and strain regional security.
