Cyprus is examining ways to speed up the deportation of foreign nationals convicted of crimes and to expand the transfer of prisoners to their home countries to serve the remainder of their sentences.
The issues were discussed during a meeting chaired by Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris, with participation from the Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, senior police officials, the director of the Migration Department, the deputy director of the Prisons Department and ministry staff.
According to the ministry, the discussion focused on reviewing current procedures and identifying steps to improve coordination among services handling deportation and prisoner‑transfer cases.
The meeting forms part of broader government efforts to manage foreign convicts more efficiently and accelerate returns or transfers, a move officials say will also help ease overcrowding at the Central Prisons through closer inter‑agency cooperation.
