President Nikos Christodoulides said he is encouraged by what he heard from the UN secretary‑general during their recent meeting in Brussels, adding that the long‑running Cyprus negotiations must eventually “reach the finish line.”
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a charity run in Ayia Napa, Christodoulides said the issue of antenna installations in the British Bases — along with several other matters — will be raised in a forthcoming, wide‑ranging dialogue with the UK.
Asked whether there has been a response from the Turkish Cypriot side regarding a new leaders’ meeting, the president said he expects a positive reply, noting there is “no reason” for the Turkish Cypriot leader to reject such an encounter.
Christodoulides said he remains cautiously optimistic. “At some point we must reach the end of this ‘marathon’ of the Cyprus problem,” he said. “I am encouraged by what I have heard from the UN secretary‑general, and I hope there will be a similar response from all sides so that clear political will, combined with planning, can translate into a concrete initiative that delivers results.”
