The EPOPAI union is urging the Electricity Authority of Cyprus to take its case to the Supreme Court, arguing that amendments to the electricity‑market law passed by Parliament three weeks ago are unconstitutional.
The union says the appeal should also cover the government’s decision on Thursday to allow the state‑owned telecom provider CYTA to enter the electricity sector through renewable‑energy production.
The union warned that the union is prepared to escalate with “dynamic measures” to defend AHK’s role in the market.
Cyprus has some of the highest electricity prices in the European Union, largely because the island operates an isolated grid and relies heavily on imported oil for power generation.
Repeated delays in introducing natural gas, slow market liberalization and the high cost of maintaining standalone infrastructure have kept consumer bills elevated for years.
The union said the latest legislative changes risk reshaping the sector without adequate safeguards for the state utility.
