The Cabinet has approved a financial support scheme for Cyprus’ pig‑farming sector to offset losses caused by restrictions imposed during recent foot‑and‑mouth disease control measures.

Authorities said the outbreak response disrupted the movement and sale of livestock products, with pig farmers among the hardest‑hit.

The new scheme aims to stabilise the sector by boosting liquidity and helping farms adjust production to current market conditions.

Under the plan, producers will receive up to €54 per fattening pig sent for slaughter, with a maximum payment of €50,000 per beneficiary.

The total budget for the scheme is capped at €340,000 and will be funded through the Agriculture Department.

Eligible applicants include individuals or companies operating registered pig‑farming units that participate in the annual Pig Farming Survey. Applications are being accepted at district agricultural offices until April 2.

The ministry said the aid will be granted under the EU’s de minimis framework to ensure compliance with state‑aid rules.

Officials added that monitoring of the sector will continue and further support measures may be introduced if needed.
