Workers at the Cyprus Electricity Authority launched a 24‑hour strike at midnight after talks with the energy minister ended without agreement on Wednesday.
Kyriakos Tafounas, head of the EPOPAI union, told CyBC radio that the measures are not an end in themselves, saying the protest concerns the cost and adequacy of electricity supply.
He said solutions exist and urged the state to address the problems seriously.
During the strike, EAC offices will remain closed, Tafounas said. Power generation will continue with skeleton staff, and no significant impact on electricity supply is expected initially.
