India has approved a major expansion of its semiconductor programme, injecting a further 1.28 trillion rupees ($13.3 billion) into efforts to boost chip design, intellectual-property development, manufacturing capacity and research, the government announced.
The move comes five years after India launched a $10 billion incentive scheme aimed at establishing the country as a global electronics-manufacturing hub.
Under that 2021 programme, the government has so far cleared 12 fabrication projects and 24 semiconductor-design initiatives.
Separately, the Cabinet also signed off on 625 billion rupees for a five-year programme to strengthen domestic mobile-phone production, a scheme the government said is expected to create around 60,000 jobs.
