Residents in Ankara district flooded again after overnight downpour

Heavy rain overnight caused flooding in Ankara, with water pooling on main streets and boulevards and beneath some bridges.

In the Keçiören district, water flooded the entrances and basements of several buildings on Gülgün Sokak in the Basınevleri neighbourhood, where part of the road collapsed following flooding on September 22.

Residents in one flooded building tried to clear the water themselves.

Burak Adaçoğlu, who lives in the building, told reporters the street had suffered infrastructure problems, including flooding and road collapses, for a long time.

He said he had left his 16-month-old child at home to clean the building.

“We have been clearing sewage water inside our home since the evening,” he said. “I left my 16-month-old child, who has a temperature of 40 degrees, at home just to clear the sewage water from my building.”

Mr Adaçoğlu said teams from the city’s water authority ASKİ had pumped out the water but left, and that the rain then intensified again and the drain refilled.

He said residents had been told a contractor would arrive within 15 minutes to open the drain, but nobody came.

He added that he had to get up at 7.30am for work in the private sector and would be docked pay if he did not attend.

Another resident of Gülgün Sokak, Veysel Dalmış, said each of the buildings was now half a metre deep in water, and that two flats in the building below his were completely covered in filth.

Gökhan Kaya said he had only recently had his home renovated and had been badly affected by the flooding.
