A Limassol court has issued the first conviction in the Republic of Cyprus for offenses involving child‑sexual‑abuse material created using artificial intelligence, the Legal Service have said.
Two young defendants pleaded guilty to charges related to AI‑generated abusive material.
The court stressed the seriousness of such offenses, noting what it called an “alarming rise” and describing the phenomenon as a “unprecedented scourge,” according to the announcement.
It said the defendants acted against individuals who had never provoked them, calling their behavior “unacceptable, antisocial and deeply selfish.”
Because of their age, the defendants received suspended prison sentences.
The court also issued additional orders aimed at supporting their rehabilitation.
No further details were released, as the proceedings were held behind closed doors due to the nature of the case.
The case was handled on behalf of the attorney general by state prosecutor Nadia Koliarou.
