FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A tense maritime pursuit involving migrants and warning shots occurred at approximately 4:50 a.m. today, according to police reports.

Authorities said the Port and Naval Police initially detected a suspicious vessel moving toward northern Cyprus. The boat then changed course, heading toward the Republic

A Port and Naval Police vessel approached for identification purposes, discovering an inflatable boat carrying about 20 people. The two navigators were reportedly wearing hoods.

Upon spotting law enforcement, the individuals attempted to flee and ram the police vessel, prompting a chase and the firing of warning shots.

The inflatable boat later struck a reef, halting its movement. The passengers swam to shore.

Police have so far located 15 people, all men of Syrian origin.

A Crisis Management Center was immediately activated at the Famagusta Police Department, and authorities continue their search for others who were aboard the vessel.

The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department is leading the inquiry, aiming to identify those responsible for the smuggling operation.
