FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The European Commission has proposed allowing automakers to average their carbon emissions over a three-year period from 2025 to 2027, rather than meeting annual targets.
The move aims to ease pressure on the industry as automakers strive to decarbonize amidst global competition and the EU’s goal of zero-emission road transport by 2050.
Carmakers would offset higher emissions in some years by surpassing reduction targets in others within the compliance window.
Current rules impose annual caps, with severe penalties for non-compliance. Renault CEO Luca de Meo previously warned of potential 15 billion euros ($16.18 billion) in penalties for the industry in 2025.
The proposal seeks to support investments in the clean energy transition and requires parliamentary approval.
