FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus’ Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, delivered an address highlighting the nation’s commitment to sustainable tourism during a TUI Care Foundation press trip at Ammos Kambouri Beach.
The event, organized by the TUI Care Foundation and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), gathered stakeholders to explore efforts aimed at preserving Cyprus’ natural beauty.
Theodosiou emphasized that sustainable tourism is critical to safeguarding the island’s economy, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. She advocated for regenerative tourism—practices that not only preserve resources but actively replenish ecosystems and support local communities.

One initiative spotlighted was “Keep Our Sand and Sea Plastic Free,” a partnership project between TUI Care Foundation and CSTI, praised for its community involvement. Volunteers, local groups, and businesses have united to address coastal plastic pollution and foster a culture of care for the environment.
She also outlined the government’s updated national tourism strategy, which spans through 2035 with an emphasis on sustainability, climate resilience, and the green transition. Plans include improved beach management, responsible marine tourism growth, and expanded efforts in waste reduction and low-impact nature-based tourism.
Aligned with European Union initiatives such as the EU Green Deal, Biodiversity Strategy, and Circular Economy Action Plan, Cyprus aims to position itself as a sustainable tourism leader while embracing agrotourism and year-round rural experiences that share tourism benefits more equitably.
Theodosiou acknowledged challenges but expressed optimism about the progress made and the growing willingness to adapt. She concluded her address by encouraging visitors to take inspiration from Cyprus’ efforts and to rethink relationships with the places they love.
