FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Cyprus remains gripped by extreme heat this week, with meteorologists warning that temperatures could climb as high as 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit), particularly in inland regions.
A yellow weather alert is in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 41°C (106°F) in central areas and 33°C (91°F) in elevated mountainous zones. The Department of Meteorology said the heatwave is expected to peak between Thursday and Sunday.
From July 24 to 27, inland temperatures are projected to range from 42°C to 44°C, while mountain regions may see highs between 32°C and 35°C. A cooling trend is expected to begin next Tuesday.
The Ministry of Health is urging the public to take precautions, citing increased risks of heat stress due to high humidity combined with soaring temperatures. Vulnerable groups—including infants and young children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses—require particular attention, officials said.
Health authorities recommend staying out of direct sunlight during midday hours, wearing hats and sunglasses, and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated.
