1960: Two renowned landmarks of the British community in Kyrenia were added to the vast empire of Cyprus Church property on this day in 1960.
The “Country Club,” situated near Kyrenia harbour by the Castle beach, was purchased by the Archbishopric for £18,000.
The Archbishop made an unannounced visit to Kyrenia, inspecting the building with lawyer Mr. George Rossides.
The Club continued to run as before for the time being, but plans were made to transform it into a tourist centre.
During his short stay in Kyrenia, the Archbishop visited the harbour to gather information about the improvements needed to make it more serviceable to tourism and the local community.
The second property acquired by the Church was the luxurious home of the late Lady Manifold in the centre of Kyrenia.
This building was bought by the Kitium Bishopric for $20,000.
It was designated to serve as officers’ mess for the Greek military contingent to be stationed in Cyprus following the proclamation of the Republic.
The Bishop of Kitium and Colonel Koumanakos planned to visit Kyrenia soon to inspect the mansion and decide on necessary alterations.
