The water situation at dams in Cyprus is “like a nightmare” and the capacity rate in some of them had dropped to 10 percent.
Phileleftheros reported in his news report titled “The Scene is Like a Nightmare… Dams Are Emptying” and “Water in Dams Has Reached the Bottom” that the amount of water in dams is decreasing day by day, and in some cases, it is only 10-15 percent of its capacity.
Citing the Water Development Department, the newspaper wrote that the stored water level had fallen far below half, adding that the total water storage capacity was 290 million cubic meters, but there was currently only 98.7 million cubic meters of stored water.
The Lefkara Dam, which is held as a reserve for use in emergencies, is 59.5 percent full, while the water levels in all other dams are 50 percent below capacity. The Kannaviu Dam is 42.5 percent full, the Pomo Dam is 40.8 percent full, and the Asprokremmo Dam is 40.1 percent full. The Kouris dam, the largest dam in southern Cyprus, is close to running out of water, with only 35.3 million cubic meters (30.7 percent) of water remaining, despite having a capacity of only 115 million. The Kouris dam was 53.1 percent full this time last year.
