FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus is observing a public holiday Monday as the country marks Orthodox Whit Monday, known locally as Kataklysmos.

The holiday, celebrated on the Monday following Orthodox Pentecost, is rooted in religious tradition but has also evolved into a cultural event.

In coastal cities such as Larnaca and Limassol, festivities include water-themed celebrations, music, and street fairs.

Banks, government offices, and many businesses remain closed for the day, though tourist areas and some retail shops continue to operate.

Kataklysmos, meaning “deluge” in Greek, is linked to biblical stories of the Great Flood and the descent of the Holy Spirit. Over time, it has become a widely anticipated holiday, blending religious observance with local customs.

Cyprus recognizes several public holidays throughout the year, including Independence Day on Oct. 1 and Greek National Day on Oct. 28. Orthodox Whit Monday is one of the key religious holidays observed nationwide
