Farmers in Greece blocked several border crossings Friday as nationwide protests continued over rising production costs and delays in subsidy payments.
At Promachonas on the Bulgarian border, freight traffic was halted until evening, with only cars and buses allowed through. Farmers at Evzoni, on the border with North Macedonia, launched an open‑ended blockade.
In Thessaloniki, tractors lined major roads as police stopped an attempt to block access to the airport and briefly used chemicals to disperse crowds. In central Greece, protesters closed the Athens‑Lamia motorway at Thiva, forcing traffic diversions.
Farmer groups in Orchomenos said they plan to escalate demonstrations Sunday by moving tractors to Kastro to block part of the national highway.
The protests began Nov. 30 after EU‑funded agricultural subsidies were delayed amid a corruption investigation, leaving producers facing shortfalls as costs rise.
