The Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare has said it is monitoring the investigation into an incident involving a dead Caretta caretta sea turtle found off Chlorakas on 12 January, which prompted public concern.

Veterinary Services determined the turtle had been dead for at least 48 hours before it was recovered, a finding submitted to the authorities examining the case.

The commissioner’s office outlined the legal framework protecting sea turtles in Cyprus, noting that the species is strictly protected under national and EU law, including prohibitions on killing, disturbing or damaging nesting sites.

Fisheries regulations also ban the capture or possession of turtles or their eggs without a permit.

The office said current legislation does not explicitly address improper treatment of dead animals, calling the gap an issue requiring further study.

The case has been forwarded to the Legal Service after police completed their inquiries under a charge of “public nuisance.”

The commissioner has also asked the police chief to review video and social‑media material related to the incident.

Local authorities in western Paphos have appointed two officers to conduct a disciplinary investigation into how the incident was handled.

The commissioner’s office said better training is needed for municipal staff and other agencies responsible for managing dead wildlife.

An information event on wildlife welfare and relevant regulations will be held in Chlorakas on 4 March with the participation of several government departments.
