Cyprus Police Probe New Viber Phone‑Scam Case

Cyprus Police are investigating a new phone‑scam case carried out through the Viber messaging app.

According to a complaint, scammers are making video calls to unsuspecting citizens while falsely claiming to represent the Cyprus Police.

In one case, a caller from abroad posed as the Chief of Police and claimed to be conducting checks related to immigration and financial fraud. The scammer persuaded the victim to reveal personal information and credit‑card details.

During the call, the perpetrator activated his camera, showing himself seated in a police uniform with his face obscured. The profile image displayed a photo of the Deputy Chief of Police.

Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious when communicating online and to avoid sharing personal data with unknown individuals.
