Washington denies entry to delegation including President Mahmoud Abbas for second consecutive year, drawing criticism from Brussels
The European Union has voiced regret over Washington’s decision to deny visas, for a second consecutive year, to Palestinian officials seeking to attend the UN General Assembly in New York, and has called on the United States to reconsider.
European Commission foreign affairs spokesman Anouar El Anouni said that, in light of its agreements and obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters, the EU was calling on the US to review the decision.
The US State Department announced on Thursday that it was refusing to grant visas to the Palestinian delegation, which includes President Mahmoud Abbas. Only members of the Palestinian mission to the UN will be permitted to take part in the annual session, which opens on Tuesday.
