Google is changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for American users, Google announced on X.
“We have long insisted on changing names when they are changed in the official sources of the authorities,” they noted.
The change comes after Donald Trump ordered the name change. The mountain Denali in the state of Alaska is also being renamed Mount McKinley in the mapping service, in line with Trump’s order.
But the Gulf of Mexico is still called the Gulf of Mexico outside the United States.
“When different countries have different official names, users see the official name used where they are. The rest of the world sees both names,” Googleadds.
