The great Hindu festival Maha Kumbh Mela ended in tragedy, after several people lost their lives in the stampede.
Panic ensued as pilgrims flocked to take a ritual bath in the Sangam River, which is connected to the holy Ganges River. The sheer number of people led to several being trampled to death on the riverbank.
On Wednesday night, it was reported that at least seven people had died.
On Wednesday afternoon, Indian police confirmed that 30 people had died. At the same time, news agencies reported varying numbers of injured, ranging from 60-90 people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi describes the deaths as a tragedy, but Indian authorities have not released any official death toll.
The festival, held in Prayagraj, is considered the world’s largest religious festival. This year, up to 400 million people are expected to attend the six-week festival.
