Despite recent damage to potato plantations, there is no expected shortage of potatoes on the market in the near future, according to Andreas Karyos, representative of the potato producers’ coordinating committee.
In a recent interview, Karyos explained that while the recent weather events have caused significant damage to the plantations, the current stock levels are sufficient to meet market demands in the short term.
However, consumers should anticipate an increase in the cost of potatoes over the next two to three months as a result of these damages.
Karyos also highlighted an important aspect of the industry’s resilience: the producers’ contributions to a compensation fund.
This fund was established to mitigate the financial impact of extreme weather events on the producers. “The compensation fund, which our potato producers contribute to, plays a crucial role in sustaining the industry during challenging times,” he said.
