FAMAGUSTA – The recent findings from the Cyprus Institute’s Center of Excellence for Climate and Atmospheric Research (CARE-C) are alarming.

Over the past five years, greenhouse gas concentrations in Cyprus have reached historic highs, with levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) continuing to rise each year. In January 2025, the carbon dioxide concentration in Inia, Paphos, exceeded 430 ppm for the first time. This is a clear indication that we are facing a serious environmental crisis.

These high levels of greenhouse gases are largely attributed to polluted air masses from Europe. While it is crucial to identify the sources of these pollutants, it is equally important to understand the mechanisms for their removal from the atmosphere. The data collected by CARE-C researchers provides valuable insights, but it also underscores the urgent need for action.

The Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region, including Cyprus, has been recognized as a global “epicenter” of climate change.

This region is more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change than other parts of the world. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting climate patterns are already affecting our daily lives, and the situation is only expected to worsen if we do not take immediate and decisive action.

It is imperative that we address this issue on multiple fronts.

Firstly, we must implement stricter regulations to reduce emissions from industrial and transportation sectors. This includes transitioning to renewable energy sources, promoting energy efficiency, and encouraging the use of public transportation.

Secondly, we need to invest in research and development to find innovative solutions for capturing and storing greenhouse gases. Lastly, public awareness and education campaigns are essential to ensure that everyone understands the gravity of the situation and takes steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

The time for complacency is over. We must act now to protect our environment and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. The findings from CARE-C serve as a wake-up call, and it is our responsibility to heed this warning and take meaningful action.
