Proposal to Prioritize Maternal Surnames Sparks Debate in Italy

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A proposal to automatically assign newborns their mother’s surname has reignited discussions on naming traditions in Italy.

Senator Dario Franceschini of the Democratic Party described the measure as a remedy for a “centuries-old injustice,” suggesting it as an alternative to the current practice of children taking their father’s surname or adopting double surnames.

The proposal comes as Italy works to implement a 2022 Constitutional Court ruling that deemed the automatic assignment of the father’s surname unconstitutional, mandating that children should take both surnames in case of parental disagreement.

While Franceschini’s idea has drawn support from some politicians, others stress the need for a balanced approach that respects both parents.

The Senate’s Justice Committee is currently reviewing four bills to implement the court’s ruling, with Chairperson Giulia Bongiorno emphasizing the importance of ensuring neither parent’s identity is overlooked.
