FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – President Nikos Christodoulides met Monday with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during his visit to Madrid, part of preparations for Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026.
Earlier in the day, Christodoulides held talks with King Felipe VI of Spain.
The discussions focused on priorities for Cyprus’s EU presidency, developments in the Cyprus issue, bilateral relations, and the situation in the Middle East.
In the afternoon, Christodoulides traveled to Portugal, where he was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Luis Montenegro on Tuesday.
Expanded talks between delegations from Cyprus and Portugal were planned to follow.
The president was also set to attend the Congress of the European People’s Party in Valencia, where elections for the party’s new leadership were to take place.
