Auditor finds waste and serious failings in Cypriot army’s catering system

Cyprus’s Audit Office has identified waste and significant weaknesses in the catering provided to National Guard conscripts, according to a 2025 report based on site inspections and questionnaire responses from more than a thousand soldiers.

The findings indicate that while the catering system broadly meets basic nutritional needs, the plans put in place are not being satisfactorily implemented in practice.

As a result, the report identifies instances of waste, departures from prescribed procedures for receiving food supplies, and risks around compliance with contractual terms governing the quantity and quality of meals. It also records cases in which food served to conscripts was found to be below safe temperature limits.

A notable finding was that roughly one in four soldiers surveyed reported having experienced mild health problems, mainly gastrointestinal complaints, which they attributed to the food provided.
