FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Firefighters remain on high alert in the Limassol district after a wildfire broke out Friday near the village of Omodos, burning roughly one hectare of dry grass, wild vegetation, and rubbish.
The fire was contained later that day, but authorities are warning of heightened risk due to ongoing extreme heat. Cyprus has endured a blistering weekend, and the weather shows no sign of cooling.
With temperatures exceeding seasonal norms, the Fire Service has entered a state of increased readiness.
Patrols and observation posts have been deployed across vulnerable areas, and the public is being urged to exercise extreme caution.
Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis appealed to residents to report any signs of fire immediately. “Timely alerts are critical for rapid response,” he said. “We ask everyone to be vigilant and responsible, especially during this period of elevated fire risk.”
