1960: The Royal Air Force potholing team began mapping Cyprus’ largest underground cave network, located deep beneath the Kyrenia Range at Pentadaktylos.
They aimed to complete the mapping during further explorations of the cave’s lower levels.
Led by P/O Mitchell, the team included S.A.C. Green, S.A.C. Summerlin, J/T Stone, and Cpl. Blackmore. They thoroughly explored the first three pitches and partially covered the next three.
New ladders from England were successfully tested during a recent training meet.
Five novices descended 300 feet without issue, despite the cave being classified as moderately to highly difficult. An upcoming meet will include practicing cave rescue operations by taking a stretcher to the cave’s bottom.
“We have a thorough training program and always welcome new members,” said Flying Officer Mitchell. Those interested were advised to contact him at the Join Air Terminal (M.E.) R.A.F. Nicosia.
