Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday that Canada will recognize Palestine as a sovereign state during the United Nations General Assembly in September, contingent on a series of reforms by the Palestinian Authority.
Carney said the recognition hinges on the Authority’s commitment to demilitarization and the holding of general elections in 2026 that exclude Hamas.
He emphasized that Canada’s support for Palestinian statehood aligns with its longstanding advocacy for a two-state solution and reflects growing international momentum toward formal recognition.
The announcement follows similar pledges from France and the United Kingdom, and comes amid mounting global concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
