Cyprus has approved a new set of fishing regulations aimed at strengthening the protection of marine species and sensitive coastal areas, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research has said.

The updated rules, endorsed by the House of Representatives and published in the government gazette on March 20, take immediate effect.

They introduce stricter prohibitions for both recreational users and professional fishers, with the goal of safeguarding vulnerable species and habitats.

Key provisions include bans on disturbing or feeding protected species, as well as any activity that alters their natural behaviour, such as during breeding or resting periods.

All cetaceans — including dolphins and whales — and the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) are now explicitly listed as protected.

The regulations also prohibit damaging or interfering with sea‑turtle nests, eggs, protective cages or related signage.

Driving vehicles on turtle‑nesting beaches and in designated protected zones is likewise banned.

Specific seasonal measures apply to the Polis–Gialia area and Limni beach from May 15 to September 30.

At Limni, placing sunbeds, umbrellas, caravans or tents is forbidden. In the Polis–Gialia marine zone, motorboats are barred from passing or anchoring within the 0–10 metre depth contour, except for small‑scale professional coastal fishers.

Public access to sea caves within Marine Protected Areas established for the Mediterranean monk seal is also prohibited unless a special permit is issued by the department.

The regulations further reinforce the ban on dumping any waste into the sea, whether from land or vessels.

Violations carry penalties of up to €20,000 and/or one year in prison.

The department said the measures reflect the shared responsibility of protecting Cyprus’ marine environment and urged the public to comply with signage and enforcement authorities.
