FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Fire officials on the British bases in Cyprus are warning of heightened wildfire risks as critically low rainfall, dry conditions, and rising temperatures push Cyprus into peak summer season.

Since early May, Defence Fire and Rescue (DFR) teams have responded to up to two wildfires daily, a number expected to increase as temperatures climb.

“It is extremely dry due to high temperatures and below-average rainfall,” said Aristos Aristeidou, Defence Training and Fire Safety Manager. “Water reserves and dam levels are critically low, heightening the wildfire threat.”

Despite the dangers, officials say preparation efforts are well underway, including a large-scale multi-agency exercise in May. Exercise Pyrsos, led by the Republic of Cyprus, allowed emergency crews to strengthen coordination between aerial and ground firefighting units.

The exercise also provided an opportunity for British Forces Cyprus’ Chinook helicopter crews to train alongside local responders, refining procedures for real-world wildfire scenarios.

Aristeidou urged the public to take precautions: “Avoid using equipment that can spark fires, dispose of cigarette butts responsibly, and refrain from lighting open flames.” He also advised clearing dry leaves and brush from properties to reduce fire risks.

If barbecuing, he warned: “Keep it away from dry grass, trees, and flammable structures, never leave it unattended, and have a water source nearby.”

With fire risks expected to remain high until late September, Aristeidou issued a final appeal: “If you see a fire, call 112 immediately—better too many calls than none at all.”
