Cyprus formally became an associate member of the European Space Agency on March 17 after parliament ratified the agreement, a move officials say will expand the country’s access to space programs, funding and technical expertise.

The new status allows Cyprus to participate more fully in ESA initiatives, opening opportunities for local companies, research institutions and start‑ups.

The government said the agreement is expected to strengthen the country’s emerging space sector and boost innovation and competitiveness.

Cyprus will join several ESA programs in areas such as Earth observation, telecommunications, technology development and commercial space activity.

It will also launch a national Requesting Party Activities program, funded entirely by the government and open only to Cypriot organizations, to support domestic research and encourage participation in ESA’s optional programs.

Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nikodimos Damianou said the development reflects the maturity and potential of Cyprus’ space ecosystem and enhances the country’s role within Europe’s space framework.

He said ESA participation will create concrete opportunities for developing advanced technologies and international partnerships.

ESA Director‑General Josef Aschbacher welcomed Cyprus’ accession, saying he looks forward to expanding cooperation as the country increases its involvement in ESA programs.
