NICOSIA – The number of building permits issued in Cyprus fell by 14.4% in May compared to the same month last year, according to the Statistical Service.
Authorities approved 607 permits in May 2025, down from 709 in May 2024. Despite the decline, the total value of approved projects rose to €315 million, covering 261,600 square metres and providing for 1,163 new dwelling units.
From January to May, 2,764 permits were issued — a 15.1% drop year-on-year. However, the total value of those permits increased by 15.5%, and the total area rose by 15.2%. The number of planned dwelling units climbed 13.2%.
Residential buildings accounted for the bulk of activity, with apartment blocks showing the largest growth. Road construction permits saw the steepest decline, down nearly 70%.
The Statistical Service noted that since 1 July 2024, permit authority has shifted from municipalities and district offices to newly established Local Government Organisations (LGOs), with applications processed through the “Ippodamos” digital system.
