A comprehensive report on the “march to power” of the far-right ELAM party in Cyprus appeared in the Greek Cypriot press on Sunday.

In an extensive spread, Phileleftheros documents ELAM’s political goals in its news article titled “ELAM’s Plans for the Presidential Elections – The Far-Right’s March to Power.”

Recalling that ELAM President Christos Christou has already stated in interviews that his party’s goal was to march towards power, the newspaper wrote that ELAM’s first stop was the 2026 parliamentary elections and that it aimed to receive over 10 percent of the votes in order to have a strong parliamentary group.

ELAM entered parliament for the first time with two deputies in 2016, and  this number increased to four deputies in 2021. Furthermore,  it supported Annita Dimitriou in the second vote for the parliamentary speakership and contributed to her election as the speaker of the parliament.

The newspaper also draws attention to the fact that Marios Pelakanos, one of the vice presidents of DISY and the government spokesman during the government of Nikos Anastasiadis, as well as Pavlos Yoannou, a well-known name in the financial world, had also joined ELAM.

ELAM’s rise has been marked by its strong stance on issues such as immigration and Euroscepticism. The party has also been involved in controversial actions, such as proposing a ban on all Muslim headgear in public spaces .

Despite its far-right position, ELAM has managed to attract a substantial voter base, particularly among younger demographics.
