FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A planned residential project in Engomi by the Holy Monastery of Kykkos has sparked backlash from environmental groups, citing the destruction of one of Nicosia’s last traditional olive groves.
The Environmental Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation criticized the project for prioritizing aesthetics over sustainability and exacerbating urban heat. According to experts, the destruction of the olive grove and the urbanization of the area will have significant negative impacts on the environment. Covering the ground with cement and asphalt, at a time when the climate crisis is already affecting the microclimate of cities, is expected to enhance the heat island effect, making living conditions in the area even more difficult.
President George Perdikis urged the Holy Synod to reconsider, proposing a public park to preserve the grove’s cultural and natural heritage.
“Development without respect for the natural and historical character of the place is not progress. It is loss,” the Movement stated, calling on the Church to uphold its role as an environmental steward.
