Cyprus Gardening: Signs of spring begin to emerge

February is perfect for planting cool-season vegetables like lettuce, spinach, carrots, and radishes.

February is one of my favorite months in the garden here in Cyprus.

It’s a time when winter starts to loosen its grip, and signs of spring begin to emerge.

Over the next few weeks, I will share some of my tried-and-true tips for making the most of your garden.

Even though it has been wet, and we have this current cold snap, I have managed to trim back dead or damaged branches from my trees and shrubs.

You should give your citrus and olive trees a good prune to encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Our neighbour has been out picking her lemons, it is the time for her kitchen to turn into a lemonade production factory!

Anyway, don’t forget to tidy up those overgrown hedges too. February is perfect for planting cool-season vegetables like lettuce, spinach, carrots, and radishes. They love the mild weather we get around this time. You can also sow seeds for herbs like parsley, coriander, and dill.

If you’ve got a greenhouse (OK, not many of us here in Cyprus do!) start your seedlings for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants so they’re ready for spring.

Your soil could use a little love this month.

Add some compost or well-rotted manure to enrich it, you might even get some of this free from local farmers (I do).

This will make a cozy home for your plants. Make sure the soil drains well, so your plants’ roots don’t get waterlogged.

Weeds are like uninvited guests, and right now are everywhere – especially around my pool.

Keep an eye out for them and pull them up as soon as you see them. Mulch is a gardener’s best friend; it keeps weeds down and helps the soil retain moisture.

Even though it’s still the rainy season, you need to check the soil moisture regularly.

Water your plants if there’s a dry spell, but be careful not to overdo it – nobody likes soggy roots or using too much water, given the ongoing drought problem  (you can read about that here on Famagusta Gazette)

Keep a close watch for pests and diseases. Aphids, snails, and slugs can be quite a nuisance.

Use natural pest control methods like neem oil or diatomaceous earth to keep them at bay. Remove any infected plant material to stop diseases from spreading.

February is also a good time to plant flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths. They’ll bring a splash of color to your garden come spring. Don’t forget to deadhead spent flowers to keep your garden looking tidy and encourage new blooms.

With a bit of effort and care, your garden will be thriving in no time. Happy gardening!
