Cyprus led the European Union in bathing water quality this year, with 99.2% of its swimming sites rated “excellent,” according to a new report from the European Environment Agency.
The annual assessment analyzed water quality at over 22,000 locations across the EU, along with Albania and Switzerland.
Ratings were based on levels of microbiological pollution, primarily from sewage and agricultural runoff, and sites were categorized as “excellent,” “good,” “sufficient” or “poor.”
Bulgaria followed Cyprus with 97.9%, trailed by Greece (97%), Austria (95.8%) and Croatia (95.2%).
