FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has met with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola during her one-day visit to the island, discussing European integration, Cyprus’ upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union, and efforts to restart peace negotiations.
During their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Christodoulides welcomed Metsola and thanked her for joining events celebrating Europe Day with Cypriot youth. He emphasized Cyprus’ commitment to an ambitious and results-driven EU presidency, which is set to begin in eight months, saying the European Parliament would play a key role in advancing EU integration.
Christodoulides also raised the Cyprus problem, reiterating his administration’s determination to resume negotiations toward a bizonal, bicommunal federation under United Nations guidelines. He praised Metsola’s long-standing support for Cyprus and the European Union’s role in facilitating a resolution.
Additionally, the Cypriot leader reaffirmed his government’s commitment to joining the Schengen Zone by 2026, marking four decades since the system’s establishment. He said Cyprus would rely on European parliamentary backing to achieve this strategic objective.
Metsola, who has visited Cyprus four times during her tenure, described the island’s high voter turnout in European Parliament elections as a sign of strong EU engagement. She assured Christodoulides that the European Parliament would continue supporting Cyprus in its negotiations toward resolving the long-standing division of the island.
Regarding Schengen membership, Metsola said the European Parliament would remain firmly behind Cyprus’ bid, pledging vocal support and backing throughout the process.
