FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus will not serve as a base for military operations, Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said Sunday, stressing that the country’s role remains strictly humanitarian and peacekeeping.
Speaking in Paphos, Palmas said Cyprus continues to assist with evacuations and support for foreign nationals, but will not be drawn into military conflicts.
He acknowledged growing public concern over the prolonged regional crisis and the increasing involvement of international actors, but emphasized that Cyprus must stay out of military entanglements.
Palmas confirmed that Cyprus receives daily requests from foreign governments, mostly related to civilian assistance, and responds effectively within a peacekeeping framework. On the recent arrest of a suspected spy, he declined to comment, citing the need to protect investigations, but assured that authorities remain vigilant.
