FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has reiterated that Cyprus will not be used as a launching ground for military operations, amid mounting concerns over the regional fallout from escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking during a radio interview, Palmas clarified that the four American aircraft currently stationed on the island are not intended for combat operations, but are part of precautionary planning for potential civilian evacuations.
He emphasized Cyprus’s role as a reliable partner and safe haven in the region, adding that the Republic remains ready to assist and facilitate the needs of citizens from friendly nations should the need arise.
Palmas also addressed questions about recent upgrades to the “Andreas Papandreou” air base and the naval base at Mari, noting that any improvements are aimed at enhancing safety and preparedness, rather than signaling involvement in regional hostilities.
