FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Sovereign Base Areas Administration (SBAA) has unveiled a comprehensive new policy to safeguard the environment and improve public safety across its beaches, as popular destinations such as Lady’s Mile and Kourion brace for up to 100,000 weekly visitors this summer.
The policy, developed in collaboration with local municipalities and NGOs, targets environmental degradation and illegal activity including unlicensed structures, waste dumping, and theft. Trained enforcement officers will patrol beach areas to uphold sanitation, food safety, biodiversity protection, and public peace.
SBAA Area Officer George Kiteos emphasized that quality of life, noise complaints, and parking infringements are central to the initiative, which also regulates business activities and land use. Educational campaigns will reinforce environmental responsibility and accountability among beachgoers.
Acting Chief Inspector Antonis Demetriou announced that the SBA Police will enhance their presence on land and sea, with an Incident Control Point Vehicle stationed at Lady’s Mile. Under “Operation Guardian,” leaflets addressing safety and conservation will be distributed throughout the season.
Violators of regulations face penalties ranging from warnings and fines to prosecution, reinforcing SBAA’s commitment to protecting natural resources and creating safe, enjoyable spaces for both residents and tourists.
