Cyprus Vote Shifts Parliament to the Right, Papers Say

Greek Cypriot newspapers say the 24 May parliamentary election has shifted the political map to the right, marking the most right‑leaning chamber since 1976.

According to Fileleftheros, centre‑right and right‑wing parties DISY, ELAM and DIKO now hold 33 of the 56 seats — roughly two‑thirds of parliament. The Presidential Palace views the outcome as favourable for the next two years, when major legislation will go to a vote.

The paper notes that these parties broadly agree on foreign policy, social issues, relations inside and outside the EU and economic matters.

Politis reported that the results “reshuffled the cards” for the 2028 presidential election. It said President Nikos Christodoulides remains a strong contender but is no longer the dominant figure he appeared to be. The paper linked this to DISY, led by Annita Demetriou, maintaining its strength, and to ELAM securing eight seats.
