We know the name, but who is Constantinos Kombos, Cyprus’ dynamic young senior diplomat?

This week, Constantinos Kombos made headlines with his visit to Damascus, Syria, where he met with the interim leader, Ahmed Al-Shaara. Discussions were particularly important ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels next week, where the situation in Syria will be a key topic.

Now a familiar presence on the European and regional stage,Kombos emphasized Cyprus’ support for the Syrian people and the prospect of prosperity, stability, and security for the region.

Here’s a closer look at Cyprus’ Foreign Minister:

Constantinos Kombos, born on October 17, 1976, in Limassol, has been serving as Cyprus’ Foreign Minister since March 1, 2023.

He has an impressive academic resume: He holds degrees in Law and European Union Law from the University of Cambridge, as well as a PhD in European Constitutional Law from the University of Hull.

Kombos joined the University of Cyprus’ Law Department in 2006, where he was a founding member and served as chairman and Senate member.

He has authored six books and numerous articles, with his work translated into six languages.

He has represented Cyprus before the Court of Justice of the European Union and advised the House of Representatives on EU Law and the Cyprus Constitution.

In 2014, Kombos was appointed to the Cyprus Problem negotiating team and participated in key negotiations such as Geneva I, Crans-Montana, and Geneva II.

As Foreign Minister, he focuses on strengthening Cyprus’ international relations and representing the nation in diplomatic engagements.
