Djibouti’s longtime leader, Ismail Omar Guelleh, has declared victory after Friday’s election, saying he is set to begin a sixth consecutive term.
“Re‑elected,” the 78‑year‑old wrote in a social media post after preliminary results showed him with a commanding lead over his challenger.
With about 6 percent of ballots counted, a tally compiled by AFP showed Guelleh receiving 96 percent of the vote. His opponent, Mohamed Farah Samatar of the CDU — a party not represented in parliament — had 3.5 percent, according to early figures.
Officials have not yet released final certified results.
