FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed Wednesday to hold accountable anyone attempting to sabotage the nation’s economy or public peace, emphasizing that such acts would face judicial consequences.
Addressing parliament members from his ruling AK Party, Erdogan reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining economic stability and combating attacks targeting Türkiye’s financial system.
Erdogan also criticized Istanbul’s municipalities under the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), accusing them of corruption and bribery.
His remarks come amid the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a prominent CHP figure, on March 19.
Imamoglu faces charges of graft and aiding a terrorist group and was sent to Marmara Prison on March 23, pending trial.
The mayor’s arrest has triggered mass protests across Türkiye, with critics alleging political motives behind the charges. The unrest has also caused significant fluctuations in the foreign exchange market.
Erdogan warned that major corruption scandals within opposition municipalities would soon come to light, claiming they would leave officials unable to face the public.
The situation continues to fuel tensions ahead of Türkiye’s next presidential election.
