Flash floods kill at least 21 in Morocco’s Safi province

At least 21 people were killed Sunday in sudden floods that struck Safi, a coastal city on Morocco’s Atlantic shore, authorities said. It was the country’s deadliest flooding in a decade.

Officials said torrential rain fell within an hour, triggering “exceptional” floods about 300 kilometers south of the capital Rabat.

Thirty‑two people were injured and taken to hospital, most later discharged after receiving treatment.

Experts noted that climate change has altered seasonal patterns, keeping higher levels of water vapor in the atmosphere and increasing the risk of extreme rainfall.

Videos posted online showed muddy torrents sweeping through Safi’s streets, carrying away cars and trash bins.

One clip showed a mausoleum half‑submerged, while civil protection crews used boats to rescue residents.
