A heat wave is sweeping across Cyprus on Thursday, with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in inland areas, according to the Meteorological Service. The weather will remain mostly clear throughout the day.
A yellow warning for extreme heat has been issued, in effect from noon to 5 p.m. local time.
Through Sunday, skies are forecast to stay mostly clear, while temperatures will gradually rise, exceeding seasonal averages by the weekend.

On Thursday, conditions will be mostly sunny, though localized cloud cover may develop in mountainous regions during the afternoon. Winds will begin as light and variable, around 3 Beaufort, shifting gradually to southwesterly to northwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Seas will be calm to slightly choppy.
Temperatures are expected to peak at 40 C inland, around 34 C along the southeastern, southern and northern coasts, and near 32 C on other coastal areas and higher elevations.
Tonight, skies will remain mostly clear. Early morning hours may see patches of low cloud and light fog, especially along southern and eastern shores. Winds will be northwesterly to northeasterly and locally variable, remaining light at 3 Beaufort. Seas will be slightly choppy in the west and calm to slightly choppy elsewhere.
Overnight lows will drop to 22 C inland, around 24 C on the coast, and 21 C in the mountains.
Friday through Sunday, the weather will stay mostly sunny. Temperatures will continue to rise slightly through Saturday, with little change expected Sunday.
